Men’s Fashion Trends

The great thing about men’s fashions is that it stays pretty consistent. There are minor changes that happen every other year or so, but usually the major looks and trends last for years. The other great thing about men’s fashion is that there are only a handful of trendy looks, oppose to the hundreds of different looks women can “go-for”. So if you’re revamping your wardrobe or just trying to figure out what’s “in”. . .then check out these current fashion trends.

Blue: Sound simple right, well it is. Blue is one the current colors of the season. This is the easiest current men’s trend- all you have to do is buy blue clothes- I’d suggest some nice cobalt blue button-ups and maybe a indigo blue tie.

Unique Frames: Nothing says “I’m fly” better than a unique pair of shades. The traditional aviators are always great, but try a box-framed aviator in one of your favorite colors is even better.

Neckwear: A great way to update your wardrobe without buying more clothes is to buy a few ties and scarves. If you’re a newbie to the scarf department you should stick to the traditional Arab scarf- it comes in a variety of colors. Ties are a great way to complete any look . . . and skinny ties are still a cut above the rest. Add a complimenting solid bright tie to your neutral toned button-up and sweater.

Lupe Fiasco always wears his scarves right

80’s: Everything 80’s is in . . .solid bright colors, geometric types shapes, gold jewelry, funky sneakers, and more. Some guys like to go completely 80s I suggest going “neatly 80s” meaning don’t go too overboard unless you’re going to themed party. Keep your 80s look neat and clean by wearing a bright 80’s graphic tee and sneakers, but instead of wearing bright 80’s esque pants wear dark denim jeans and some unique frames.

Rock Star: One of the most popular looks for men is the “Rocker look” everyone from Lil’Wayne to David Beckham rocks style that make them look as if they bonified Rock Stars. The main staples for this look are fitted t-shirts and jeans that fit (no baggy jeans allowed). An Ed Hardy t-shirt and True Religion jeans are easy ways accomplish “The Rock Star”. I suggest mimicking ensembles of true rock starts like Travis Barker or mimicking the styles of guys who have the look down-pack like Lupe Fiasco.

Jim Jones & Juelz Santana Rock it out

Urban Prep: This is my personal favorite. It’s such a versatile look and truly signifies the meaning of “The Urban Gentleman”. Urban Prep is a mixture of the latest hip-hop trends and the traditional preppy look. There are a variety of ways to get the look, and is up for individual interpretation, but one simple example is to wear a fitted hat and chuck tailors/converse or unique sneakers with a button-up, sweater vest, and tie.

Men’s Grooming 101: The Basics

 |  Grooming  |  2 Comments
There are many facets to men’s grooming, but there are a few basics that every man should remember, practice, and keep dear to his heart.

Hair + Nails = the bare minimum

No matter the amount of money you have in you pockets $5 or $500, it doesn’t take much to keep your hair and nails up.

Every man needs to own a manicure set.
There is nothing more distasteful than seeing a man with long nails. . . its just disgusting. Having long nails makes a man look like an old-school pimp, drug dealer, drag queen, or junky. When you have long nails it’s easy for dirt to collect underneath, and what woman wants her man to touch her with long dirty nails? . . . none.

Buy your manicure set from any store: Walgreens, Target, or Publix. . .everyone has them. OR you can order them online, we have a few in The Urban Gentleman Store.

Hair is also very important . . .and for men it’s really easy to keep your hair looking good. If you have the dough then make sure you get a fresh cut every 2 weeks. And do your own shape-ups on the weeks in between. For all the longer hair guys keep the hair-do neat and be sure to keep your hair washed . . . nobody likes snowflakes in July.

Once your nails and hair are in tact you can move on to the other basics . . .

Skin + Teeth = a little above the bare minimum

Tyrese Gibson may just be the poster-child for great teeth & skin

Don’t just use a Dial soap bar and a washcloth to clean your beautiful physique . . . use a body wash with cocoa butter or shea and a loofah. And if you’re blessed to have a face with great skin, then keep doing your regular face cleansing routine, but if you have bumps, pimples, or other little face blemishes try: Noxzema, Sea Breeze, and/or Proactive. Check out the best acne treatments here.

There’s nothing more refreshing than a great smile. Everyone may not have the straightest most-even and Hollywood-esque teeth, but it’s easy to have the cleanest and whitest. First off, be sure to brush and floss your teeth twice a day. Secondly, the best method to getting a killer-smile is using Crest Whitestrips. Crest Whitestrips are a guaranteed whiter smile, and I strongly believe that everyone should use them at least every 2 1/2 years. If you have really dull or yellow teeth you may want to start by using them every 4-6 months for no more than 2 years- I’ve seen some great things sticking to that teeth-whitening schedule:-) Check out the best Crest has to offer here.

Okay guys, once you have these 4 basic things down, you’re on your way to possessing characteristics that are innately gentleman-like.

Maintaining your hair, nails, skin, and teeth are not only good hygiene, but they will surely get you extra points with the ladies because those are the first things that women notice about a man.

Welcome to The Urban Gentleman

Greetings Gentlemen,

I want to welcome you all to my new men’s fashion and grooming blog: The Urban Gentleman aka “the urban gent”.

I have a deep passion for fashion– cliché right? Yeah I know. . . but it’s true. I already have a fashion blog that focuses on women’s styles and trends, but I must say, men’s fashion speaks to me. Ever since I worked in Men’s Furnishings at a high-end retailer, I’ve been sort of an expert on men’s grooming and fashion. While I was there I was surrounded by the best-dressed and most stylish men I’ve seen in my life (besides a few of my close relatives of course:-). I learned the ins and outs of men’s suits, best designers, shoes, ties, pocket squares, bow ties, jeans, etc. I was trained in all the details from fit to materials. I dressed NFL stars, Grammy-winning artist, CEO’s, producers, and tons of millionaires, oh and of course many “everyday guys”- I loved it! No one can touch me on my shirt/tie/pocket square combination!

But back to the blog . . . the reason I created this blog is because I constantly have male friends and family asking me fashion and grooming questions. And I always go shopping with them, where they ask me more questions. So finally one day I decided to look online for men’s fashion resources and low and behold– they were few and far in between. Then I searched for websites that focused on a mix of trends, street fashion, and luxury fashion…. and I couldn’t find anything! So I said to myself, “I should create it”. And after pondering upon it for awhile, I decided “The Urban Gentlemen” would be a perfect name.

The Urban Gentleman will focus on different aspects of men’s fashions and grooming, it will be the modern man’s fashion guide (all men, all sizes, all backgrounds). I’ll try to cover everything from the basics like how-to-tie-a-tie to what is the best type of jeans for your body style. I’ll also consistently keep you updated on the latest men’s fashion styles and looks and male trendsetters.

But all in all this will be my personal taste and style preferences for men. I don’t want my guy to be extra square or extra hip-hop; I want him to be classic yet contemporary, trendy yet refined, I want him to be an Urban Gentleman. I love men in Canali suits and Ferragamo shoes and I also like a guy that can rock an A’s fitted, Seven jeans, and a big-faced Polo. I think now a days, as a man, it’s important to be able to mix the classic and the modern and to always have an edge (when appropriate).

So again I welcome you! Tell all your family, friends, and acquaintances about my blog . . . hopefully I will become your resident men’s fashion and grooming expert!

- Cindy S.

PS- I’ll also try to give you guys a few tips on how to treat a lady because that’s very important for an Urban Gentleman. Also etiquette tips will be in the midst.
