Date Night with Your Lady

Gotta have a date night w/ your booskie:-)

On the weekends I try to give you gentlemen different type of advice… something that is applicable to the weekends. Topics over the past few weeks:

The Perfect Club Attire
How To Prepare For a Female Visitor

And this week: Date Night With Your Lady

Every Gentleman has to take out time to spend with his boo, atleast once a week- to show her that you care. And the time you spend does not have to cost you $3oo and some change… I mean you can spend that much- I’m sure it would be much appreciated, but you don’t have to:-)

Here are some really fun, cute, inexpensive (and kinda expensive) dates you can have with your lady:

1. Dinner & a Movie (yaaaawn)

It’s been done, you probably already do it if you don’t then it’s a cute alternative… otherwise try to think more creatively.

2. Chinese Take-Out in the Park

Instead of doing the traditional: pack some food in a basket and head out to the park on a sunny afternoon. Try packing some really good chinese take-out and heading out to your prettiest local park one evening. You could also bring an ipod player so you both can enjoy some romantic music (perhaps a little Coltrane). Now this does sound easier than it is because you’ll have to bring a blanket and some OFF- just in case the mosquitoes come lurking.

3. Roof-top Sunrise

This is pretty cheesy and it may seem kinda unrealistic, but it’s more doable than you think. If you live in a major city this is easy because there are so many buildings that have ladders or stairs on the side that lead to the rooftop. Once on the rooftop relax, talk, really get to know each other, get completely lost in conversation about life and the future then before you know it you’ll see a beautiful sunrise. It’s really romantic and you’ll feel like you’re in a movie! If you’re worried about getting caught trespassing then go to a rooftop of one of your friend’s apartment buildings – it should give the same effect… (note: if this is planned you should atleast bring a blanket).

4. Cartoons and Junk Food

Okay this one isn’t for every chick, but for certain ones this will be really fun. Get a few seasons of The Boondocks, Family Guy, or South Park– though explicit and often time racist and derogatory these cartoons are funny as hell. While watching these shows pig out on a few of her favorite guilty pleasures maybe m&ms, doritos, papa johns and just have fun. (be sure to have plenty of bottled water to offset all the sugar and salt)

5. Salsa Lessons
This is always fun, if you haven’t done it then you need to. Google salsa clubs or salsa lessons given in your area, then setup a time to go. You could make it into a complete Latin night by taking her to a tasty Spanish restaurant after the lessons.

6. Jazz Night
Jazz nights are the best! They make you feel “grown & sexy” (yes I know that phrase is dead, lol, but it’s appropriate for this sentence). Every city has Jazz Nights- it may be at a restaurant, museum, club- just find out where and make sure you go. If you’re from Atlanta I highly recommend Jazz at the High Museum (every 3rd Friday).

7. Unique Restaurant
Everyone goes out to eat, it’s just a basic for the whole dating thing. But for your special chick switch it up by taking her to a unique restaurant. Like a house that was turned into a restaurant or a themed restaurant- just somewhere really different and new.

8. Get-a-way In the City
One of the most romantic dates is when you “get-a-way” in the city. Choose a really elegant hotel and book a room for a night. Order room service, watch movies, give each other massages and just get it on!

At the end of the day, it’s all about thinking outside the box- have fun and be sporadic! Do things that make you both happy:-)

An Urban Gent Basic: How-to-tie-a-tie

This is a topic that half you may be pros in while the other half are amateurs. Tying a tie is a basic that every Gentleman, especially an Urban Gentleman, should know how to do.

Simple picture instructions:

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Windsor Knot

The Windsor Knot is a thick, wide and triangular tie knot that projects confidence. It would therefore be your knot of choice for presentations, job interviews, courtroom appearances etc. It is best suited for spread collar shirts and it’s actually quite easy to do.

While just about everyone can use this tie knot to tie his tie, it looks especially well on men with longer necks as its wide form shortens the perceived height of the neck a little bit.

The wide end “W” should extend about 12 inches below the
narrow end “N”. Cross the wide end “W” over the narrow end “N”

2) Bring the wide end “W” up through the loop between the collar and your tie; then back down.

3) Pull the wide end “W” underneath the narrow end “N” and to the right, back through the loop and to the right again so that the wide end “W” is inside out.

4) Bring the wide end “W” across the front from right to left.

5) Pull the wide end “W” up through the loop again.

6) Bring the wide end “W” down through the knot in front.

7) Using both hands, tighten the knot carefully and draw it up to the collar.

2. Half Windsor Knot

The Half Windsor Knot, a modest version of the Windsor Knot, is a symmetrical and triangular tie knot that you can use with any dress shirt. It works best with somewhat wider ties made from light to medium fabrics.

To tie the Half Windsor Knot, select a tie of your choice and stand in front of a mirror. Then simply follow the steps below:

1) The wide end “W” should extend about 12 inches below the narrow end “N”. Cross the wide end “W” over the narrow end “N”.

2) Bring the wide end “W” around and behind the narrow end “N”.

3) Bring the wide end “W” up.

4) Pull the wide end “W” through the loop.

5) Bring the wide end “W” around front, over the narrow end “N” from right to left.

6) Again, bring the wide end “W” up and through the loop.

7) Bring the wide end “W” down through the knot in front.

8) Using both hands, tighten the knot carefully and draw it up to the collar.

3. Bow Tie Knot

The Bow Tie Knot is used to tie a bow tie and is worn to give you a formal and elegant appearance. A “black tie occasion” such as a wedding is an event that you would commonly wear a bow tie at, along with a tuxedo.

The proper size should never be broader than the widest part of your neck and should never extend past the tips of the shirt collar.

1) Place the bow tie around your neck, situating it so that end “A” is about two inches longer than end “B”.

2) Cross end “A” over end “B”.

3) Bring end “A” up and under the loop.

4) Now double end “B” over itself to form the front base loop of the bow tie.

5) Loop end “A” over the center of the loop you just formed.

6) Holding everything in place, double end “A” back on itself and poke it through the loop behind the bow tie.

7) Adjust the bow tie by tugging at the ends of it and straightening the center knot.

An Urban Gentleman Question: Can Men Wear Skinny Jeans?

In the past, without thinking, I would say “heck no… unless you’re a rockstar or you’re gay” because those two types are the only ones who, in the past, have been able to successfully pull it off. But I’ve really thought about this question over the past few months or so and I say that wearing skinny jeans totally depends on the type of person wearing them. (plus many types of guys have been wearing them for years)

I was talking to one of my friends last weekend and we started to talk about Lil’Wayne. He mentioned how non-hetero Lil’Wayne looks in his latest video- A Mille. I don’t watch videos too tough, so at first I didn’t know what he was talking about. But after watching the video, I could kiiiinda see what he was talking about. But the jeans that Lil’Wayne are wearing in the video aren’t really that skinny, they’re more of the “saggy version” of skinny jeans. . . because they Do make them really really skinny. And anyway at the end of the day I believe Weezy can pull of skinny jeans. Why? Because he meets my skinny jeans wearer criteria.

Pharrell rocks skinny jeans
(they aren’t really skinny they just fit)

Male Skinny Jeans Wearer Criteria:

1. Thin or skinny body frame
Thin guys just look better in skinny jeans, bigger guys just look downright uncomfortable in tight pants- it’s NOT a good look) I have a friend who always talks about how he loves “thick dark-brown girls in skinny jeans”; well it isn’t the same for females…. We don’t rave on and on about loving muscular dudes in skinny jeans, sorry.

2. Rock-star
Almost every rock star wears skinny jeans; it’s just apart of the rock star persona. Most of them end up wearing really tight black leather pants at some point in their careers, and it’s cool because it’s some type of rock-star tradition of sorts.

3. Artistic Personality
People with artistic personalities, be it in visual arts, fashion, music, whatever- they usually have the ability to pull off new trends with ease, and they’re usually the ones to start the trends anyway.

4. Caribbean born or descent
It’s a part of the culture- to some extent. I’m half Jamaican and I’ve seen tons of pictures of my dad and his friends rockin’ not so loose jeans throughout the 80s. Matter of fact he has one picture in a pair of red skinny jeans with a varsity type jacket, leaning against his Beamer- its kinda hot…. I’ll upload it if I can find it.

5.) Non-heterosexual
I hope this doesn’t offend anyone, but let’s be honest gay men can pull of shyt that straight men can’t. It’s just apart of life and the sooner some of you all realize it, the better :-)

A combination of atleast 2 of the 5 criteria is the best, but having atleast one is essential. The 1st point about being skinny is also a must, so really you should atleast match #1 plus any of the other numbers.

Notable skinny jeans wearing music artist: Travis Barker, Lil’ Wayne, Chris Brown, Pharrell, and almost every rockstar.

Chris Brown
(note that sagging with a belt is oxymoronish,
please guys pull the pants up)

All in all be cautious of skinny jeans. If you think you wanna wear them or you think you can pull them off, just make sure the styling is right. You can buy them from a couple places- Gap,, American Apparel, LRG stores/websites, and Urban Outfitters.
