Local Urban Gentleman: Alija Harrison

As some of you know, there is a new segment to The Urban Gentleman called “Local Urban Gent” in which I will feature Urban Gentleman from around the world. If you have serious style, swagger, and ambition and want to be featured send an email to urbangentblog@gmail.com expressing your interest. Only a select few will be featured so be sure to include a top-notch picture showing your style.

This weeks featured Local Urban Gentleman is Alija Harrison. He’s a senior at Bowie State University majoring in Pedology (Children Studies, “Alija love the kids”). After graduation next year, he plans to attend grad school and major in counseling so he can become an elementary school guidance counselor- that’s pretty commendable, huh? America can always use more black men as counselors and teachers- kudos for stepping up to the plate.

2. How did you become so stylish? The area I grew up in, Prince George’s County Maryland (Richest African American county in the U.S.), everyone dresses like they are about to be in a photo shoot, lol. I am inspired by the kids I work with, they have to have a stylish guy to look up to.

3. What advice would you give someone trying to find their personal style? Pick the most random thing in your closet and rock it! Wear stuff that is very very hard to find, limited edition type stuff.

4. What’s the best clothing advice you’ve received? Well I would say to keep a clean shape-up (once every other week). Lastly, Buy a nice pair of hard shoes.

An Urban Gentleman Question: Can Men Wear Skinny Jeans?

In the past, without thinking, I would say “heck no… unless you’re a rockstar or you’re gay” because those two types are the only ones who, in the past, have been able to successfully pull it off. But I’ve really thought about this question over the past few months or so and I say that wearing skinny jeans totally depends on the type of person wearing them. (plus many types of guys have been wearing them for years)

I was talking to one of my friends last weekend and we started to talk about Lil’Wayne. He mentioned how non-hetero Lil’Wayne looks in his latest video- A Mille. I don’t watch videos too tough, so at first I didn’t know what he was talking about. But after watching the video, I could kiiiinda see what he was talking about. But the jeans that Lil’Wayne are wearing in the video aren’t really that skinny, they’re more of the “saggy version” of skinny jeans. . . because they Do make them really really skinny. And anyway at the end of the day I believe Weezy can pull of skinny jeans. Why? Because he meets my skinny jeans wearer criteria.

Pharrell rocks skinny jeans
(they aren’t really skinny they just fit)

Male Skinny Jeans Wearer Criteria:

1. Thin or skinny body frame
Thin guys just look better in skinny jeans, bigger guys just look downright uncomfortable in tight pants- it’s NOT a good look) I have a friend who always talks about how he loves “thick dark-brown girls in skinny jeans”; well it isn’t the same for females…. We don’t rave on and on about loving muscular dudes in skinny jeans, sorry.

2. Rock-star
Almost every rock star wears skinny jeans; it’s just apart of the rock star persona. Most of them end up wearing really tight black leather pants at some point in their careers, and it’s cool because it’s some type of rock-star tradition of sorts.

3. Artistic Personality
People with artistic personalities, be it in visual arts, fashion, music, whatever- they usually have the ability to pull off new trends with ease, and they’re usually the ones to start the trends anyway.

4. Caribbean born or descent
It’s a part of the culture- to some extent. I’m half Jamaican and I’ve seen tons of pictures of my dad and his friends rockin’ not so loose jeans throughout the 80s. Matter of fact he has one picture in a pair of red skinny jeans with a varsity type jacket, leaning against his Beamer- its kinda hot…. I’ll upload it if I can find it.

5.) Non-heterosexual
I hope this doesn’t offend anyone, but let’s be honest gay men can pull of shyt that straight men can’t. It’s just apart of life and the sooner some of you all realize it, the better :-)

A combination of atleast 2 of the 5 criteria is the best, but having atleast one is essential. The 1st point about being skinny is also a must, so really you should atleast match #1 plus any of the other numbers.

Notable skinny jeans wearing music artist: Travis Barker, Lil’ Wayne, Chris Brown, Pharrell, and almost every rockstar.

Chris Brown
(note that sagging with a belt is oxymoronish,
please guys pull the pants up)

All in all be cautious of skinny jeans. If you think you wanna wear them or you think you can pull them off, just make sure the styling is right. You can buy them from a couple places- Gap, Levis.com, American Apparel, LRG stores/websites, and Urban Outfitters.

How do you feel about men in skinny jeans?

From G’s to Gents: Episode 2

Marcellus Reynold and Fonzworth Bentley
I love Bentley’s casual look- perfect.

The bad acting continues. . .

In a nutshell: The episode starts with a “B*tch calling contest”, a few of the guys call each other and their mothers the B-word. After getting dressed they go down and read The Daily Gent, which is a newsletter about the activities of the day. The Daily Gent lets them know that the day is going to be about fashion. The guys drive down to Beverly Hills to meet with celebrity stylist, Marcellus Reynolds at the Reiss store. He gives them a few tips and pointers about fashion and style. After the visit to Reiss the “G’s” find out that the next challenge is going to be a fashion show.

Britsh men have impeccable style,
Ozwald Boateng has dressed Jamie Foxx and Will Smith

For this event celebrity stylist Ozwald Boateng was the guest judge. The guys were divided in a group of 4 in which one guy had to be the spokesperson while the other 3 dress up for a particular event/occasion: 1. Spokerperson at a Country Club 2.) Skybox Party 3.) Charity Event aboard a Yacht. Stan, Zenel, and E6 win simultaneously, which left group A as the winners with immunity (Stan & E6′s team).

Male stripper Stan wins the Country Club look

When it came down to elimination. D-Boy had 1 black ball, Zenel had 2, Mikey P had 2, and Kesan had 7. In the end Mr.Bentley sent Zenel and Mikey P home because he felt like they were already doing pretty good for themselves as actors and/or models. (Even though Kesan is a actor as well and a rapper, but whatever, lol. . .this show is too fake).

Zenel and Mikey P loose their Gentleman’s Club Membership

Lesson 2: Fashion
Fashion is a non-verbal language. You notice it as soon as a person enters the door, so it’s a part of the first impression you give off. It’s all about dressing appropriately for everywhere you go. The suit is the international uniform for business.

Every man should know how to a tie a tie. When tying a tie make sure you have a dimple in it; the dimple is also known as the “Wall Street Clevage”.

Urban Gent view: Fashion is obviously very important, hence this blog, lol. And a dimple in your tie is a must.

Fonzworth Bentley and his guest judges looked superb all episode.

Men’s Fashion: The Marching Band Jacket from Lupe Fiasco to Chris Brown to Michael Jackson

Being a nerd has never been so cool
Georgia Tech Marching Band

It’s never been so cool to be a nerd. Not only do nerds currently rule hip-hop, but they also dominant the current styles. From the most preppy L7 (square) clothes to borderline bi-focals. . . dressing nerdyish is too cool for school. And the marching band jacket falls right in line with these trends.
Chris Brown rockin a really haute band jacket at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards

Kanye West, Chris Brown, and Lupe Fiasco all seem to be fans of the band jackets. And the new Converse commercial featuring Santogold in a marching-band jacket has seemed to make the trend even more popular … everybody wants a band jacket now!

Lupe Fiasco has some of the most meticulously designed
marching band-esque jackets I’ve ever seen.
I’m sure Dr. Romanelli helped to create a few.
(Dr.Romanelli has designed several of Lupe’s jackets)

Wearable marching band jacket are actually pretty hard to come by. The style is popular, but only a few brands and stores carry it, so the jacket is sold out everywhere. I found a website that carries some unique variations of the marching band:

Ipso Facto Jackets

$60.50

$69.50

$241.50

Life Research Group LRG carries variations of the
marching band jacket too

To be honest, the marching band jacket style isn’t just about marching band jackets. The style is actually a mix and cross-over between marching band jackets, military jackets, varsity jackets, and motorcycle jackets. Both Chris Brown and Lupe Fiasco sufficiently mix these styles in their wardrobes. And as long as you have one of those type jackets you can easily gain the edgy looks that the superstars create.
If you happen to come across “marchmiliVarmoto” type jacket, scoop it up quick because it most likely won’t be there for long.

This new style is also somehwhat of a tribute to Michael Jackson- who started it all. You can find many of these retro style jackets on eBay.com for a really good price.

2008 Espy Awards: Red Carpet Fashion

Justin Timberlake hosts the 2008 Espy Awards

The 2008 ESPY Awards were held at NOKIA Theatre L.A on July 16, 2008 in Los Angeles, California. The 2008 ESPYs will air on Sunday, July 20 at 9PM ET on ESPN.

I must say- I was a little disappointed in much of the attire at the Espy Awards. Don’t get me wrong, everyone looked nice, but only a select few were truly stylish and well-tailored. At first I only wanted to put up the best-dressed celebs from the event, but I decided to include some of the plain and not so great ensembles as well.

Carmelo Anthony & Lala

Carmelo looks okay, it’s dapper…

David Beckham and wife Victoria Beckham are always dressed perfect

Check our David’s collar
It’s a rounded or club collar.
Not every guy can pull it off, and if you have a big head don’t try

He’s not an athlete, but actor Zac Fron was really sharp

I’m a fan of skinny ties
This High School Musical star looks fly

Jalen Rose
He was one of the only guys to rock it out in all white.

College Basketball Player
Russell Westbrook
The casual look is cool, but he could have worn a better jacket.

Boston Celtic, Rajon Rondo & wife
He was definitely on my best dress list

Veron Davis
pretty regular…

Terrell Owens
He was pretty clean, better than last year…

Soccer star, Christiano Ronaldo
He looked great for a man on crutches
Actually, I really digged his look- really smooth

Soccer Player, Freddy Adu

Good ole Samuel Jackson...
This was a fashion fatality, it’s not a good look.

NFL player Shaun Phillips
Gold? Are you sure about that??
Ummm, it’s okay, very nicely tailored though

Jerry Rice
He’s always dresses pretty nice…

NFL player Braylon Edwards
He was trying to go for the edgy look, but as you can see below…

…it just didn’t work.
Are those jeans? w/ a silver cumber bun
This is why there are stylist, so you don’t end up looking like this:-)

Paul Pierce & girl
He looks country… really country

NBA player Steve Nash
He looks quite gentlemanly

Derek Fisher and ESPN host, Stuart Scott

Justin Timberlake looked great!

David Beckham

Eli Manning and New York Giants

(I’ll add more pics over the next few days)

Men’s Style: The Perfect Casual Club Attire

Jay-Z, Usher, Nelly, & JD hittin’ the club

It’s Thursday night and many of you are making plans to go hit the club scene. The problem is that most of you may not go out looking as fly as you think. Many men tend to over think the club attire, they’ll wear baggy jeans with a button down shirt that may be tucked into the front to show off the belt buckle, lol, then they’ll have on some shades. . . it’s just an all-around bad look!

There are so many different types of looks you can rock to the club. And depending on what kind of club you’re going to you may dress up or dress casual. But overall there is a great basic club look that will surely catch the right attention…

The basic club look: slight v-neck tee, quality dark denim jeans (that fit you), dope sneakers that fit your personal style, and a fitted hat (preferably an A’s fitted, lol). You should also wear a nice belt, stunner shades, and a stylish watch.

Slight V-neck shirt:

The v-neck shirt has been around for awhile, but stores like American Apparel have made it popular. The v-neck is modern and edgy, but you have to make sure the V isn’t too deep, unless you’re attracted to the same sex. Deep V’s are extremely popular with gay males, I hope I’m not offending anyone, but it’s true. You can wear a deep V as a heterosexual male, but you may attract more dudes than chicks (I’m from Atlanta so I know:-) I suggest a dark colored slight v-neck tee like navy, black, or burgundy, but a graphic slight-v is also a great choice.

3-pack American Apparel, $36
Buy it here

Akademics, $28
Buy it here.

Quality Dark Denim Jeans

You can’t go wrong with dark denim. It’s simple, stylish, and always make you good. Check out the jean guide to find the brand that fits you best.

LRG, $54.99
Buy it here

Armani, $135
Buy it here

Dope Sneakers That Fit Your Style

Don’t listen to people that tell you women don’t notice your feet- b/c they do. It’s not about having on the newest pair of J’s, it’s about having nice clean kicks that enhance your style. They don’t have to be loud or exotic, they just need to coordinate.

All Stars: keep it funky or stick to the classics

Supra’s in croc suede

Skater Shoes are pretty hot- DC

Vans Authentic are always a good choice

Creative Recreation shoes always give an edge

For Accessories:
- New Era has a plethora of fitted hats you can choose from

- Check out my watch guide for info on the best watches- I would suggest a gold or digital watch

- Rayban has some of the best shades at good prices- you can buy them on eBay

- You can find belts anywhere, for new styles check out journeys.com

Sidenote: If you sag a little make sure you have on some nice boxers (Old Navy has nice ones)

MOST IMPORTANTLY:
Check to make sure you have some breath-enhancers and some really good cologne (not too strong though). Also, make sure you atleast have a shape-up and please make sure your nails are cut.

Have fun at the club tonight! And use protection if you end up getting some nookie (too many STDs out there)…

*** This is the basic casual club look alternative for those who usually wear baggy jeans, XL tshirts, and airforce ones. This blog is full of other, more modern and gentleman like looks that would be great for the club Ex. blazer, v-neck, trousers, and lace-ups   -OR- button down, dark denim jeans, and boots… club attire changes for each club and each person.
