Be Smooth: Basic Skin Care for the Urban Gentleman

For some reason somebody created the myth that men don't need to do worry about skincare… "Lever 3000 and Suave is all I need" are words that have been echoed by many- and I must say, "It's sad, oh-so sad". A man doesn't need 20 cremes to take care of his skin, but please guys you can do better than Lever, Suave, and Old Spice.

First off everyone has a different type of skin, some of you may have really dry skin while others may have really oily, sensitive, normal, or problem skin- it's important to realize what type you have. Once you realize it you can buy products that are best for your type of skin.

There are a few key products that most men should use and own:

1. Palmers Products: Shea, Cocoa, or Olive

The realness of it all is that Shea Butter, Coca Butter, and Olive Oil are GREAT for the skin of people of color. If you want smooth, bump-free, stretch mark free (yes men get stretch marks too, especially if you work out) then it's all about these products. Palmers has the best range of products from oils to lotions to cremes to soaps they have it all. And the price of their products are great! Where to buy: Walmart, Target, Walgreens (most drug stores), and online.

Try this:

After washing your body in the shower, rub some Palmers Coca butter oil on from neck to toe then rinse it off. And once you step out the shower dab yourself dry instead of harshly rubbing the towel against your body… I promise you'll see a difference within a week or so.

2. Jack Black Products

They have such a comprehensive range of products that fits all skin types and complexions. There are many men who absolutely swear by Jack Black (I've met a few).
Where to buy: Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Sephora, and online.

Try this:

After washing your hands put on some Jack Black Hand Healer. It's the perfect product for men who work out alot and have rough hands from lifting weights, it's also great for guys who always work outdoors or have jobs that leave their hands rough and dry. I suggest carrying some in your car and having one at home.

3. The Art of Shaving
Oh how I love the name… it just sounds like it's good, huh. Like Jack Black, The Art of Shaving carries products that are great for all skin types. But the difference is that this brand specializes in products for shaving, every gentleman should own atleast one Art of Shaving product.
Where to buy: The Art of Shaving Store, Nordstrom, online.

Try this:
Many men, especially men of color, tend to get ingrown hairs and lots of bumps when shaving.
If you run into this issue then dab some Ingrown Hair Night Cream before going to bed.

Other Good Products:
4. Lab Series
5. MenScience

Anyone who knows me, know's that: 1. I'm from the A-town 2. I'm All about Fashion and 3. That I think Andre 3 stacks is one of the most talented guys in the world… hands down. I was browsing the net and found this supercool list of Andre 3000's 10 Essentials, check it…

1. Bejamin Bixby Oxford Button-Collar Shirt
Andre says, "I dress it up, I dress it down. I can rock it with damn near anything"

Product Details: Price $225 at

2. Native-American Beaded Necklace
Andre says, "I wear it almost everyday — even when nobody else can see it, it's under there somewhere."

Cindy says, " Everybody has that one thing that they always wear for whatever reason, Andre's is a native-american necklace, one of my best friend's is his braided leather bracelet… whatever it is, it should be appropriate and tasteful and you should hide it, like Andre does, when it doesn't match."

3. Wes Montgomery
Andre says, "With Jazz I get a pure mood music for my own thoughts instead of being bombarded with another person's lyrics. I can think alot clearer. It's the next best thing to silence."

Cindy says, "I completely agree with Dre, I use jazz to relax and just be free. When you're stresses and trying to chill go to and listen to John Coltrane radio."

4. Converse Chuck Taylors
Andre says, "Black, navy, or natural will always work. For me,, they bring any look down to earth."

Cindy says, " Ditto- Converse were on the Essentials of Cool List I made a few weeks back"

5. Slingbox
Andre says, "It's a lifesaver when I'm out of the country during football season. I get to watch whatever game is on my television at home. College or pro, I'm always down to watch some pigskin."

Cindy says, "I've heard of the slingbox, but have never looked it up to find information on it, but now that I have it seems like the perfect gift for someone who travels alot"

Andre says, "Anywhere I can jump of a plane and spot a gent in the summertime looking cool as the winter is a place for me."

Cindy says, "Ummmm, duuuh, Italian style is always great, I love seeing pictures of Italian street style- it's flawless"

7. Blackberry 8700
Andre says, "Sad, but my crackberry cell phone has become my linus blanket. I never put it down. Brain tumor, here we come."

Cindy says, "Back during high school and early college I was all about the Treos, but now that I have a blackberry it just doesn't seem possible to go any other way- the email system is the BEST hands down, but the iPhone is giving Blackeberry's some stiff competition."

Product Detail: Price $100 at

8. Atlanta
Andre says, "Not one place in particular, because if I gave it away, it wouldn't be the go-to-spot anymore, now would it? No matter where I may roam, I love coming home to reboot."

Cindy says, "It's aaaallll about Atlanta enough said. lol"

9. Benjamin Bixby Braces
Andre says, "Either navy-and-white-striped or firehouse-red. I feel safe and comfy in them."

Cindy says, "I love braces on men, but you have to wear them right… I'll do an article on them pretty soon. Nordstrom has some of the best braces"

Product Detail: Price $135 at

10. Hank Aaron-Era Atlanta Braves Cap
Andre says, "I've worn and washed it so much that it fits my head perfectly. It reminds me of days in the ballpark with my baseball fanatic cousin."

Cindy says, "This hat is a must, I even have it and I'm a girl. Whether you're from Atlanta or not, this hat is something that's signature classically Andre' and it doesn't hurt to have it in your closet.

Gentleman Attire: Ne-Yo’s Year of the Gentleman

Always in aviators and a hat:-)
Ne-Yo at Big Mac birthday party in July

I must admit, I’m not the biggest Ne-Yo fan, but there are a couple things that I like about the guy. 1- his song writing skills (Irreplaceable was sooooo hot) and 2- his suits. I don’t always like the way he puts his ensembles together, but I certainly love the high quality of his suits. And his recent album cover pictures REALLY caught my eye!

Pretty hot, huh. My main issue with Ne-yo’s attire is usually his hats- I mean c’mon dude you can’t wear those hats with everything! But his signature hat does look good on the pictures above. His suits are son darn well-tailored ALWAYS and it is such a beautiful thing. Besides rockin’ well-tailored suits, Ne-Yo is also known for his unbuttoned shirts, hats, and aviators… which make’s it easy to get his style:

hat + aviators + tailored suit or unbuttoned dress shirt & jeans= Ne-Yo’s style.

Oh, and don’t forget about the smile….

Local Urban Gentleman: Marcellus Cooper

As some of you know, there is a new segment to The Urban Gentleman called “Local Urban Gent” in which I will feature Urban Gentleman from around the world. If you have serious style, swagger, and ambition and want to be featured send an email to expressing your interest. Many of you have been shy and hesitant to send your submission, but don’t be! All you need is atleast ONE great picture with style (but try to send atleast 3). And I KNOW I have international readers, so I need some you guys from India, Ireland, Egypt, England, Dominican Republic, Canada, Ethiopia, China, etc to STEP UP and send me your information!!:-)
This weeks featured Local Urban Gentleman is Marcellus Cooper. He is a Graduate student at my rival school, University of Georgia (booo, lol) where he is majoring in Education. He has a serious love for classical fashion and his knowledge only grew when he worked for Brooks Brothers. While working with the company he sent a plethora well-dressed men into the streets of Atlanta… and for that, we thank you.

Presenting Mr. Marcellus Cooper…

it’s always great to be trained in your passion

Name: Marcellus Cooper
Age: 27
Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Occupation: Graduate Student
Favorite Quote: Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it. (Colin Powell)
Style Icons: Currently none.
Favorite Brands: Brooks Brothers, H. Stockton
Favorite Store: Currently Brooks Brothers.
Favorite Piece of clothing: Paisley bow tie (Primarily navy blue with red and gold undertones).
Bow-tie or tie: Depends on the occasion but I prefer a bow-tie.
Flat front or pleated pants: Again, depends on the look but most frequently pleated (classic look)
Shades, hat, or scarf: scarf
Description of favorite accessory: Interchangeable watch bands that match bow ties I wear. They are pretty neat, only noticeable to the very observant.
Ultimate career/life goal: Establish and grow a successful multi-national consulting firm, foundation, and hedge fund group.
Favorite Book: Think Big (Benjamin Carson)
Hobbies: Playing tennis or golf, traveling to obscure but beautiful places, speaking with others (about politics, business, and faith), volunteering, jazz sets, UGA football, playing piano and the guitar, listening to old and new music, photography.

1. How would you describe your style? My style is classic or traditional. I enjoy sweater vests with bow ties, calf-skin leather shoes (cap toes) are always a favorite.

2. How did you become so stylish? Where did it come from or who inspired it? I must say throughout the course of my life I admired the men like my father, men who carried themselves with distinction and dressed sharply. I began to see the importance of distinguishing oneself in the journey of life with excellence. Dressing is only part of the equation but it can be a factor that opens doors or closes them whether people acknowledge it or not. I would say my inspiration would be every man that I saw who held their head high and caused people to pause because they were that dapper. Dressing sharp makes me feel great!
3. What advice would you give someone trying to find their personal style? Always remember two things…. 1) your style evolves over the course of your life so don’t fret if you haven’t found your niche. 2) Always remember that your presentation is never more important than your substance, however, your presentation is still important.
4. What’s the best clothing advice you ever received? Regardless of what everyone else is wearing know that you are an individual. Be courageous enough to be you! (My father)
