AT&T x The Urban Gentleman Holiday Giveaway

12 Days of Giving #ATTGiftSweeps

We’ve teamed up with AT&T to bring Urban Gentleman readers our first 2015 holiday giveaway #TUGiveaways… a brand spankin’ new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+. Yea bruh… only the best for our loyal TUG fans. AT&T is running a 12 Days of Giving campaign (started Monday) and we’re happy to be apart of it.

To prepare for the giveaway I was able to experience the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, and overall it’s hands down one of the most beautiful phones on the market right now. The gold case, the beautiful screen spilling over like an infinity pool, vibrant colors… seriously, it’s nice.

THE REVIEW.

I went snowboarding and skiing in February with a group of friends, one of which is an avid Samsung gadget collector. My friend sported both the Samsung Watch and the Edge. He was showboating a little,  but I had to go ahead and admit that the phone was gorgeous. I'm happy to be able to experience it, see The Urban Gentleman review below:

LOOKS: Beautiful… the Samsung Galaxy Edge is the infinity pool of phones – it's modern, luxurious, and attractive. The large 5.7 inch HD screen, vibrant color, and clarity are everything… it almost looks 3D.

DURABILITY: I've found Samsung Galaxy's to be very durable in general– my S4 was dropped on several occasions and never cracked. The S6 Edge Plus suffered it's first drop this morning, face down on a granite floor — I'm happy to report it's still pristine. That said, I'm always sure to have a case and screen protector on my phone.

EDGE: The edge feature is the highlight of the phone, hence the name.  My first few days of having the phone I didn't really do much with it, besides admire it of course, lol… then I decided it was time to learn the Edge. With a few back and forth swipe motions you're able to view the time, your alarm, weather, and any notifications you have set up (texts, emails, etc). You're also able to have folder like tabs for your main contacts and apps.

MORE STATS AND FEATURES: The battery changes super fast– fully charged in an hour, for the win! 4GB RAM Memory, Storage in 32GB or 64GB. 16megapixel camera. Mobile wallet – so you can keep your cards at home and just carry your phone. And of course, tons of apps.

CHANGES: With all its beauty and perks it doesn't have a removable battery and SD card slot, which is a bit of a bummer. Buuuut that's been standard fair in the world of iPhones for years, so really its not the biggest deal.

Overall we're definitely fans of the edge. After visually swimming in an infinity pool, it'll be hard for my fingers to go back to the regular. Check out the AT&T/Samsung Holiday Gift Guide, here.

Season of Giving

In the spirit of giving, I was asked to mention an item that I’ve re-gifted. That got me thinking… hmmm, I don’t think I’ve ever re-gifted something, but I’m not opposed to the idea. If the items is worth giving and you’re pretty sure the receiver will be happy then it’s a win. You’ve saved money, you’ve saved time and energy, you cleared up some space, and perhaps reduced your carbon footprint just a little.

I have a new luxurious chocolate colored cashmere cardigan sweater I was given a couple years ago that’s just sitting in my closet… I think I’ll be re-gifting that this year. What’s your take on re-gifting? Have you ever done it and if so what?

How To Win the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus: Follow us on all social media, repost a link to this article, and comment below on re-gifting. Contest starts Monday, December 7th and will run until Monday, December 14th.

American Needle: The Original Snapback + Giveaway

Snappin' is back. We've been talking about it for the past couple years, but 2011 is probably the more official year of snapbacks being on the scene for fashion kids and on the shelves of retailers that have kept their ear to the ground in terms of what's hot. The in-trend wearing of snapbacks got me thinking about the origin of the popular late 80s/early 90s style hat. After a little digging I found that snapback hats are thought to have originated in the mid to late 1800s– when different types of hats were being used for the old American pastime of baseball. At the time, several different caps were being used with the baseball uniform– straw hats, boating caps, cycling caps, jockey caps, etc. So a less modern, more basic version of the snapback might have been around.

Brooklyn Excelsiors  and New York Knickerbockers in 1858

The official baseball hat (as we know it today) was first worn by the Brooklyn Excelsiors in the mid 1800s, but the hat first became an official part of the baseball uniform on April 24, 1849 when the New York Knickerbockers unveiled their official club uniform.

old style (vintage) baseball caps

I guess if there was a "snapback" back in the 1800s, the "snap part" had to have been similar to the metal snap buttons you often find on windbreaker jackets. There is still some speculation on how far back the history of snapping baseball caps go. But what we all know for sure is that the famous snapback caps we know today came about in the 1980s, and were made popular by the hip-hop/rap music culture of the era. That's where American Needle comes in…

Tupac Shakur wearing an American Needle snapback

American Needle (AN) is the original snapback maker, and started selling "the snapback" everyone loves today in the late 80’s. The vast majority of the high fashion snapbacks of the time were American Needle designs. A lot of the hats were worn by musical icons of that era – even American musical icon Tupac wore American Needle's Blockhead style in the movie Poetic Justice.  And now, AN has brought back many of their originals for us to indulge in… pretty sweet, right? Moreover, they've chosen to giveaway 5, yes five of their original Blockhead style snapbacks to The Urban Gentleman readers. I mean, who doesn't love a free snapback?

I'm pretty intrigued by American Needle's history (In 1946, American Needle supplied the first Major League Baseball team caps ever sold to fans in a ballpark – in Chicago's Wrigley Field. ), and I'm very impressed by the vast array of hats they have. I've never quite seen an online retail collection of hats like theirs. They manage to cover most, if not all, historical style baseball hats. (plus you can search them in order from 1869 onwards, check that out here.) I actually felt like I got a mini history lesson just from perusing there website. Case-in-point: I didn't know that the Braves franchise was first in Boston, then Milwaukee, then moved to the best city for the team– Atlanta šŸ˜‰

RYZ Sneakers: G3-Series

2

There are always new products coming out, and most of it ends up being pretty damn mediocre, yanno #basic. But when you combine former Adidas U.S. and Japan President, Rob Langstaff, and well-known artist/designer Todd Alan Breland you get more than mediocre. These guys combined their experience and expertise to create a new, design-focused footwear brand– RYZ. Initially starting with graphic focused designs, RYZ has recently introduced a new modern, streamlined line of sneakers– The G3-Series.The G3 kicks are meant to provide men a staple, "all-around sneaker"– something you can wear with cargo shorts or a suit. I'm not always keen on sneakers -and- suit pairings, but I can easily see these with a slim-fit casual suit. In the words of RYZ Founder Rob Langstaff and Creative Director Todd Breland, "By combining the refined sensibility of dress shoes with the comfort and aesthetics of athletic footwear, RYZ challenges convention creating a refreshing foundation for men of every generation".

To take it a step further you can customize the G3-Series: the style, the color, and the soles. So we gave it a try…

Gucci Guilty for Men: Review and 5-Day Giveaway

Gucci Guilty for Men.

The newest fragrance from Gucci is Gucci Guilty Pour Homme. We were big fans of Gucci by Gucci, so we were looking forward to testing out the newest men's scent from The House of Gucci (details/review below). The face of their Gucci by Gucci campaign was James Franco, so for Gucci Guilty they chose yet another Hollywood star, this time Chris Evans (from Fantastic Four, and the highly-anticipated film Captain America: The First Avenger). Check out the Frank Miller (Dark Knight, 300, Sin City) directed Gucci video below:

Thanks to the good folks at Gucci we'll be sponsoring a 5-day Giveaway (yes, everyday this week) of Gucci Guilty Pour Homme…

Cologne Details:

TOP NOTES: lemon and lavendar

MIDDLE NOTES: orange flower

BASE NOTES: patchouli and cedar wood

Very detailed notes summary: "The scent seizes hold of the senses with a heady cocktail of invigorating Italian lemon and mandarin with crushed green leaves – evocative of sap rising – and a defiant punch of pink pepper. Its middle motifs persuade like a whispered invitation. The herbal freshness of lavender coils around an aphrodisiac cardamom note – at once stimulating and entrancing – on an unexpectedly tender bed of orange flower and neroli. The patchouli that is the hallmark of all Gucci fragrances is married with cedar and sandal wood gleaming with amber to create a robustly earthy, yet suggestively exotic sensuality of a profound masculinity."

Review: The fragrance opens like many of my favorite colognes with fresh italian lemon, but I think the mix of cedar and sandalwood  (from the base note) with the lavendar creates a semi-stark ending for me. That said, once the fragrance lingers for a few minutes it leaves a masculinely  fresh scent– which is always a great thing. This strikes me as easy go-to date cologne.
