Scentbird Men: Review

Cologne Convenience: The Scentbird Men

Scentbird Men is a subscription cologne provider that delivers your favorite cologne to your door for $15. There are alot of subscription services out there these days, but sometimes it's hard to commit to one– many of us barely want to subscribe to magazines. However, I think with grooming items, like cologne, it's easier.

For most, cologne is a staple in our grooming collection, so Scentbird Men is a natural fit. You'll especially become a fan if you like to switch up your fragrance and try new ones. Scentbird has over 350 colognes to choose from monthly: Gucci, Dolce and Gabanna, Hermes, Burberry and many more. You get a bottle of cologne that lasts 30 days or 120 sprays (4 per day), then right around spray 100 or so you'll get your new bottle.

Decluttering your Grooming Products.

Between the special facial cleansers, beard oils, and hair gels men are starting to have just as many products as women. So I like the fact that this can help you become a little more minimalistic. Instead of a tray of 3, 4, 5, 15, or so colognes sitting on your dresser or window sill there's just one. Plus, the bottle is small so it's also very easy to carry around you could have it in your car or gym bag.

What Scents Should I Try?

For some of you this is easy– you're faithful to your top 3 colognes that you keep in steady rotation. On the other hand if you're unsure about which colognes to choose then take a trip to a large retailer to do a little "cologne window shopping". Test a few fragrances, remembering to sniff coffee beans in between (to refresh your palette), and write down your top 4 or 5. This will provide you with the perfect Scentbird List to start with.

For my first bottle I chose YSL L’Homme. It arrived quickly and securely in Scentbird packaging. I worried about whether or not the fragrance would be as strong as the traditional bottled version, and after a week of using it I can luckily say it is. Next month I may go for Tom Ford.

Would love to hear your thoughts on Scentbird if you've tried it. And if you haven't you can test it out by visiting Scentbird for Men, here

Gucci Guilty for Men: Review and 5-Day Giveaway

Gucci Guilty for Men.

The newest fragrance from Gucci is Gucci Guilty Pour Homme. We were big fans of Gucci by Gucci, so we were looking forward to testing out the newest men's scent from The House of Gucci (details/review below). The face of their Gucci by Gucci campaign was James Franco, so for Gucci Guilty they chose yet another Hollywood star, this time Chris Evans (from Fantastic Four, and the highly-anticipated film Captain America: The First Avenger). Check out the Frank Miller (Dark Knight, 300, Sin City) directed Gucci video below:

Thanks to the good folks at Gucci we'll be sponsoring a 5-day Giveaway (yes, everyday this week) of Gucci Guilty Pour Homme…

Cologne Details:

TOP NOTES: lemon and lavendar

MIDDLE NOTES: orange flower

BASE NOTES: patchouli and cedar wood

Very detailed notes summary: "The scent seizes hold of the senses with a heady cocktail of invigorating Italian lemon and mandarin with crushed green leaves – evocative of sap rising – and a defiant punch of pink pepper. Its middle motifs persuade like a whispered invitation. The herbal freshness of lavender coils around an aphrodisiac cardamom note – at once stimulating and entrancing – on an unexpectedly tender bed of orange flower and neroli. The patchouli that is the hallmark of all Gucci fragrances is married with cedar and sandal wood gleaming with amber to create a robustly earthy, yet suggestively exotic sensuality of a profound masculinity."

Review: The fragrance opens like many of my favorite colognes with fresh italian lemon, but I think the mix of cedar and sandalwood  (from the base note) with the lavendar creates a semi-stark ending for me. That said, once the fragrance lingers for a few minutes it leaves a masculinely  fresh scent– which is always a great thing. This strikes me as easy go-to date cologne.

POWER by 50

 |  Cologne, Grooming  |  1 Comment

Years ago when someone heard the name 50 Cent two things usually came to mind: the catchy opening line, "Go, go, go shawty, it's your birthday, we gon' party like its your birthday…" -and- the fact that he was shot 9 times and somehow miraculously survived. Now when someone hears the name 50 ("cent" has been semi-officially dropped) they almost instantly think– Vitamin Water, million dollar tweets, and businessman. Curtis "50" Jackson is sorta like the Donald Trump of hip-hop– in terms of his diverse portfolio and growing knowledge in business. For him success isn't based upon where you came from, but about honing in on a "skies is the limit" type mindset. And that's sort of what his fragrance POWER is all about– embracing your inner power to be successful.

I've always been partial to light and airy, yet masculine colognes. So when I initially smelled POWER I wasn't overly blown away, but once the scent lingered awhile I was impressed. POWER by 50 is a traditional, masculine fragrance, and like its name the scent is full of powerful bold notes– so only 2-3 sprays are needed for a lasting effect. The bottle's design alone will make you want the cologne,  in fact, the sturdy and luxe look of the flacon was inspired by 50's favorite watch– a Piguet.

HIMistry Grooming

H.I.M-istry grooming products were created by Darnell Love Henderson in 2004. Throughout life he faced skin care needs that he felt were being ignored by many companies.  So he derived a line of products that would focus on the basic needs in men's skincare and would provide professional quality skincare products to men of all skin types and racial backgrounds.

H.I.M-istry, which stands for "Healthy Image Man", tackles many distinct needs like skin discoloration, ingrown facial hairs, anti aging, and more.

We were able to review a few of the products…

Blackberry Salicylic Cleanser: This cleansing gel provides an exhilarating, berry-clean freshness to help produce fresh looking clear complexion. An advanced deep pore resurfacing action increases cell turnover and help diminish the appearance of razor bump, acne break-outs and other negative affects on the skin. Ideal for normal/oily skin types.

Urban Gent Review: Smells great… like blackberries. Leaves my skin feeling cleansed and fresh.

Black Tea Bamboo Scrub: A mix of a Micro dermabrasion and light moisturizing cream. The effects of this scrubs natural ingredients provides a boost in skin cell shedding by manual exfoliation to give an all over healthy tone. The natural fruit ingredients causes mild skin peeling and are used on the face and body to treat acne, smooth the surface of the skin and diminish superficial signs of aging and negative effects on the skin (peels off dead skin).

Urban Gent Review: This product works well and definitely gives the skin a scrubbing. The scrubbing crystals are a little harsh, but no different from most scrubs.

OC-10 Serum: A lightweight serum that protects and revitalizes the skin with CoQ10 and Vitamin E to regenerate and defend the cellular matrix form environmental stress and premature aging.

Urban Gent Review: Feels sort of like a light-lotion. And very lightly moisturizes the skin, I still opt to use another moisturizer after/with this one.

AHA Clearing Pads: Deep strength exfoliator with combination of Alpha Hydroxy Glycolic, Lactic and Pyruvic Acids with Kojic, Bearberry and Licorice to exfoliate, inhibit skin discoloration, razor bumps. Use 2 to 3 times per week before bed.

Alpha Premier Fragrance: (Our Review): A nice everyday cologne. The woody scent makes it a  perfect winter fragrance to try, purchase, here.

Purchase the above products, HERE.

OVERALL REVIEW: A good line of products that are scientifically created for every type of guy, with men of color in mind– so the product line gets a few extra points off back.  It's very important to use these products in the proper order. I was initially using the scrub, then cleanser, then serum and I found my skin very lightly peeling in the middle of the day. But once I changed to cleanser, then scrub, then serum this went away. If you're in need of new products, then I'd give HIMistry a try.

Random Fact: HIMistry caught the attention of higher US officials (US government)– in a good way.  The H.I.M.-istry (Healthy Image Man) line, including cleansers, toners, and scrubs,  will be in 150 Army and Air Force Exchange Service stores across the country…. pretty cool. I guess that's what happens when you  are able to specifically create products that are meant for a range of ethnicity groups.

More from Himistry:

More and more men are looking for skin care products that cater to their needs. Men have thicker skin which tends to be oily and show signs of aging as testosterone levels decrease. Factors such as sun damage, lifestyle choices and nutrition play a significant role in skin condition. H.I.M-istry offers natural based Facial Care products formulated with cutting edge ingredients that moisturize, purify, repair and fight visible signs of aging and negative effect of the skin .

A man's skin is approximately 15% thicker than a woman's. Active sebaceous glands cause men's skin to be oilier with larger pores and a richer blood supply. Regular deep cleansing is a necessity to maintain a healthy complexion. Men’s skin is also more prone to be dehydrated due to daily or frequent shaving. No matter your skin type, it is important to maintain a regular skin care regimen to keep pores clear, and healthy looking.
