‘Tis the Season for Gift Giving: The Urban Gentleman Ultimate GIFT GUIDE for MEN

Okay, lets get down to business, you need gifts and you need them now. You’re a guy or a gal who’s in serious need of help on what to get: the fashion-forward stylish friend or man in your life (you know the one who technically dresses better than you), or the young up and coming urban gentleman who has watched a little too much of Run’s House (particularly Diggy) and now wants to emulate everyone stylish (he’s on a mission to have the best style, the sickest fashions, and is the only 13-yr old you know who wears glasses without prescription), or you’re just simply looking for a unique solid gift idea that will appease your friend, brother, boyfriend, husband, dad– basically a guy or guys in your life that deserve (or don’t deserve) a nice thoughtful gift.

Loyal Urban Gent readers already know the trends, but if you’re not a regular go ahead and boost your style IQ by reading about the TRENDS in men style (seriously click on the link then come back to this article and continue reading). You want to choose a gift that will either compliment his style or up-it, and based on the current trends and your personal analysis of him you should be able to gauge how “fashionable” he is and get an idea of what you would like to purchase him.

From the current Urban Gentleman “What Do You Want for Christmas” Poll, it seems as if most guys want casual apparel for the Holidays, followed by dressy apparel, then electronics. So we’re going to work with that. With that said, grooming items are always an easy surefire way to atleast bring on an authentic smile and thank you. Grooming items may not be on the very top of most gift lists, but a great smelling fragrance will be used everyday.

Okay so here’s the approach: you call or text the guy you are purchasing the gift(s) for, and ask for his basic size information, “Hey ___his name___, I’m about to go holiday shopping and I just wanted to get your sizes just in case I buy you clothing?” You should get their pants/waist size (a number like 32, 34, 36), their shirt size (M, L, XL), shoe size, and dress shirt size just in case you opt for the dressy apparel (based on their neck and arm length you should get a number like 17/35 or 16.5/36). Coats, blazers, and jackets usually come as M, L, XL or 36,38,40 (which is the chest size) If you are buying someone a suit (how nice), be sure to get that information as well.

Here’s a basic chart of the S-M-L conversions:

I always try to, if possible, give gifts in pairs– it’s fun to have more presents to open up, right? If having to choose from one pair of $150 jeans -or- one pair of shoes and 2 shirts at $150, most people would go with the latter. But at the end of the day quality is better than quantity (for the most part).

Obviously a Playstation, Xbox, Wii, and DJ Hero Renegade Edition with Jay-Z and Eminem will be on the lists of many young Urban Gentlemen. A flat screen, blackberry, GPS navigational system, or slr may be on the lists of all the other Urban Gentlemen. If you have the money and they don’t already own it, I’ll certainly suggest getting them one of the items above, but besides those fun gadgets I’ve listed a few specific gift ideas below. Note: though most of the suggestions combine two or three items, they can also be broken down into individual items that would make as great singular gifts.

ULTIMATE MEN’S HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE

Gadget-Friendly:
Watches & Headphones. Everyone’s tired of the tiny earbuds, they are useful when working out, but when you’re relaxing at home or at a friend’s place you want headphones. We all thought cell-phones replaced the watch, but they’re actually more popular than ever. Artistic, colorful, and creative looking headphones and watches are heavily in vogue, especially for the younger urban gentlemen.

Dark denim jeans are a basic that every person needs, and the boots– well its Winter and if you have a larger budget a pair of boots would be the icing on the cake.

The Upgrade, the Businessman:
Many guys have enough casual clothing in their wardrobes and above all else need to seriously up their dressy attire. Suits are pricey, but would make as a very thoughtful gift, as would dress shirts, ties, cufflinks, and pocket squares. They are all nice additions to the closet of a business man or someone who needs a businessman upgrade.

Groom Him:
If you don’t know enough about a guy to buy them clothing, then colognes makes a for a great gift option. You can read a few of our cologne posts to get an idea of what fragrance might be best. Here’s a great collection of Men’s Fragrances.

Budget Friendly: $40ish or less.
If you have a small budget… no more than $50, but more like $20/$25, then I suggest getting a gift that compliments something they already have or plan to receive for the holidays. If they are going to get an ipod, then get them stylish headphones or a digital docking speaker system. If he’s a sneakerhead who expects more fly kicks, get him a unique fitted hat. If his Christmas is going to be filled cardigans and blazers, purchase a quality scarf or men’s messenger/satchel bag. If he’s getting alot of money– maybe a new wallet would be nice. When you don’t have alot of money to spend thoughtful gifts are best, they show the person that you really do pay attention and care. If the linked items above didn’t catch your eye, check out the budget finds below:

It's the Holidays and many of you will be doing alot of mingling, whether it's at your company's holiday party or at your family's Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa dinner. As always, we here at the Urban Gentleman endorse looking your best at these functions and of course looking your best starts with grooming. Yeah, let's put the clothes and shoes aside for a second, and get to the core. We've already written many articles on basic grooming, skincare, moisturizers, manscaping, chap-stick/lip balms, even the best soaps for men, but we don't have too many that focus on hair.

Shampoos, conditioners, and styling gels will come at a later date, besides we've reviewed many of those items in the past. Today, we'll focus on styles.

So here's a collection of men's hair styles, many of them great, some creative, some okay. I know every guy has a different hair texture, but these days with the massive amounts of styling tools and products, most of the hair looks below can be achieved on almost any hair type: curly, straight, or wavy.

Usher Raymond

I figured we'd start with the classic line-up and waves. I know many men love this style and put in serious work to get those perfect sea-sick waves. What's the trick again guys? Always brush from back to front, right? with a boar bristle brush.

Usher Raymond

Usher's Raymond's hair and overall grooming is always immaculate– thanks to his now ex-wife and stylist Tameka Foster Raymond. It's always nice to have a woman around that can help keep you well styled and groomed.

I'm a huge fan of Zac Efron's hair, his hairstylist/barber continually updates his look. He's like the male version of Rihanna. His latest hairstyles, all featured here, are my favorite. Above he sports the classic short cut, combed over and back, with a side part. This hairstyle embodies the Conservative Dapper trend , you'll instantly look like a character from Mad Men.

Zac Efron

Zac Efron

This is a looser longer version of the hairstyles above. Also very handsome especially with a little 5'oclock shadow.

In this photo, Zac's hair is also cut short with a side part. But the part is less obvious and the hair is cut in more layers on top, then swept backwards. Also, one of my favorites.

I'm not a fan of the swept-over/"mop-top" hairstyle on most guys, unless it's on someone 17 or younger. Zac sported these when he was in his teens, through-out high school musical, and once (from what I can remember) this year, I hope he's done with this look.

John Cho

The slightly spiky hair is a staple for most celebrities these days. It's pretty easy to style and maintain without having to go to the barbershop or hair salon. Cut it shorter on the sides, longer in the middle, then use your favorite product to create fun messy spikes. When you're done it's suppose to look like "neat messy bed-hair"– if that makes any sense.

John Cho

I think I'm just a sucker for classic men's hairstyles because, like Zac, I think John's hair looks the best like this.

For ease of browsing the rest of the hair gallery will be divided by background/ethnicity and (somewhat) hairtype.

1. Men of color/African-American: Curly/wavy hair textures
2. Asian/Pacific-Islander/Indian: Straight/wavy hair textures
3. European-American/Caucasian/Latino: Straight/curly hair textures

Men of Color/"African-American"

Andre' Benjamin

Not everyone is a fan of this 50s/60s hair-do, but I adore it. Why? Well because it flows along with his preppy southern-boy Benjamin Bixby look- it gives him character. The girl version of him or of this hairstyle would have to be Janelle Monae, she also sports a reto hair style (an afro-curly pompadour to be exact).

Andre' Benjamin

No this isn't a conk, lol, which for those who don't know is a hairstyle worn from 1920s-1960s where American men of color would straighten their hair and style it into a pompadour (examples: Nat King Cole, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, James Brown). To get this hairstyle Andre' probably uses a texturizer, moisturizing conditioner, or styling product that makes the extreme curls in Black-American hair looser, creating a wavier hair-texture. Definitely, don't try this at home, go to a salon or barber when first trying to achieve the look.

Andre' Benjamin
Everyone shouldn't attempt to wear this hairstyle. It's take a certain attitude, personality-type, and overall style to successfully pull it off.

Will Smith
You can't go wrong with a mini shaped-up fro and dark taper.

Kanye West

His 808s and Heartbreak look, further boosted the trend of ambiguous faux-hawks. It's hard to walk out the house and not see atleast one person with a faux-hawk, I'm sure its that way in every part of the world.

Kanye West

Afro-mullet. 4 words= not a good look. I felt what Kanye was doing– his girlfriend was bald, and his label mate, Rihanna, has fashionable hairstyles, but I just wasn't a fan of this look of his. Maybe the mullet can safely return in about 5 years, who knows…

Kanye West

Artistic expressions through hair has always been a trend in the Black-American community– with men and women. Though distracting, I thought this cut of his was kind of cool. I mean, why not do it? Now of course, this is excessive for the average guy, I most likely would not recommend this to someone unless they had a distinct personality, but as an artist this is just another non-harmful way to express yourself.

This design was only on Kanye's left side.

John Legend keeps his hair is small twists. If you want this look it's best to go to a salon. Depending on your hair-texture you can get a similar curly look with a texturizer or a conditioner that brings out the natural curls in American of Color/African-American hair.

John Legend

As you can see John's hair is usually the same,
he only makes changes to the thickness of his beard.

Ludacris.
Very-low afro-fade, with strategically cut side-burns.

Asian/Pacific-Islander/Indian

Actor Daniel Henney (from X-Men Origins Wolverine)

I honestly can't get enough of this guy, he's so hot (sorry guys, lol), and his hair is always perfect. He's definitely a good source of hair inspiration for men with a similar hair type.

Daniel Henney

Daniel Henney

I love his hair here. Simple, elegant, and extremely healthy. Doesn't his hair look extraordinarily healthy, he should be endorsed by a men's hair care line.

Actor James Kyson Lee (from Heroes)

The faux-hawk is still a fashionable hair-style of choice, it just doesn't have the impact that it once did since every other fashion forward guy wears one.

Daniel Dae Kim (from tv show LOST)
I often find that a person's hair looks best when they work with the natural texture of their hair.

Daniel Dae Kim

Aziz Ansari

Do you guys ever watch him on NBC's Parks & Recreation? . He's hilarious, and makes the show in my opinion. If he wasn't on it I most likely would not watch it. (I randomly discovered the show one day on Hulu when I needed something extra to watch– and just like Community it grows on you.)

Aziz Ansari

I'm a fan of his simple low-cut. It's low-maintenance (depending on how fast your hair grows) and stylish.

Aziz Ansari

Kal Penn

Kal Penn sports a very subtle faux-hawk.

———————————————————————————-

European American/Caucasian/Latino

Ed Westwick

Zachary Quinto

A perfectly styled short and straight hair cut, that forms a small pompadour. His eyebrows seem to be shaped as well. If you have bushy eyebrows try to keep them tame and neatly trimmed.

Robert Pattison

So this is vampire hair I suppose, nah I'm kiddin. He does however resemble Wolverine, lol, hmmm? I really do like his hair though– all-over messy bed-hair combed back a little. Actually, maybe I don't like this…. I like the hair I'm just not sure if this is the best cut & style for his face though. (sigh) Okay, I do like it on him, but it just looks better from afar it appears overly done up-close.

Robert Pattison
It's as if the style above just fell.

Johnny Depp

I'm not a fan of this hairstyle, for some reason, it often time comes off as creepy or strange. However, people like Johnny Depp can get away with it.

Russell Brand
Keeps his hair long with loose natural curls.

Jonathan Bennett

Matt Damon with his usual tapered/crew cut.

Soccer/Futbol player Ronaldo Cristiano reminds me of David Beckham when it comes to his hair, he's had an assortment of hairstyles over the years. Here he wears a slightly curly faux-hawk.

Ryan Seacrest is probably one of the originators of the spiked hair trend.

Taylor Lautner

David Beckham
He's had every hairstyle in the book from short crew cuts
to mohawks to faux hawks, as pictured above.

Even if you aren't going to a family gathering or holiday party, these photos can help inspire a new-look for 2010. Have you been rocking your hair the same way for the past few years? If so, it's time to switch it up. Find your favorite hairstyle above, print this page out, and hang it on your mirror or wall just so that the idea of the new cut can properly sink in (maybe ask a few friends how they think the hairstyle would look on you), then when the time is right, take it to your barber and try it out.

Urban Gent LOOK BOOK: Native Inspiration

This look was centered around the Humor Zobis sweater. I really like the asymmetry of the pattern, it gives the sweater just enough visual depth. When looking at this sweater earlier today it began to remind me of the traditional patterns used in Native American garments. That led me to find a pair of shoes that embodied that same feel and look, and of course the Bernard Willhelm Crazy Horse shoes were a dead on match. I also considered the Martin Margiela hi tops because of the deep cherry color, but they changed the whole “modernly native” look I was going for. I initially paired the sweater with Crooks&Castles dark grey jeans, but grey took away from the uniqueness of the crazy horse kicks, so I opted to go with black. I chose Chronicles of Never Cubism jeans because of the fit– particularly the crotch. The crotch gives the jeans that modern harem pants look. Even though I was initially (sort of) opposed to that trend, I must say it is growing on me and looks great when worn right. With all the black I felt like I needed some subtle color to pull out the red and blue from the sweater, and the Folk Peoples knit hat was perfect. To top it all off I added the Damir Doma bracelet, and yes I know it’s expensive, but it has a natural elements feel which goes along with the native theme. If you want to take the look a bit further also try the Damir Doma button broach, it helps complete the overall Modernly Native feeling.

Humor Zobis sweater $95; Folk Peoples hat $81; Chronicles of Never Cubism jeans $316; Bernard Willhelm Crazy Horse shoes $339;
Damir Doma bracelet $485

If If Had to Shop for You, Online, Today… this is what I’d buy: Urban Gentleman BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING GUIDE PT.1

Everyday for the past month I’ve received several emails from urban gents around the world seeking advice on “back to school clothing”. Some of you are going back to high school, others college, and some may just be returning from a summer long vacation and want to purchase a few things for casual days at work.
Let’s be upfront about things- this recession is a b*tch… especially for us Americans. Now my readers from Europe, Asia, Australia, etc you guys probably have a bit more money to spend. So I’m going to mainly shop according to the current budgets of many people who reside in the U S of A, but of course I’ll also shop for the readers who are banked and happily unaffected by the recession (sitting pretty on those trust funds).
Okay, lets get started.

I will choose items and place them in 3 or so self-explanatory categories: pocket-friendly (less expensive), i gotta trust fund (more expensive), and my favorite (items that I just personally like in addition to the other choices) or etc.

So here’s your very basic back to school check list:

2 pair of jeans
4 or more graphic tees (or a polo/tee combo)
2 pair of shoes
1 outwear piece (cardigan, jacket)
accessory of choice

The trends you want to keep in mind are the same, but basically at the end of the day you should “do you” just in a really polished way.

First Up: Jeans.
(perfect sexy jeans)

POCKET FRIENDLY: Express. Great fit, nice quality, and you really can’t beat their buy one get one half off sale. A pair of their jeans ranges from $50-$90… meaning on the light side you could get 2 pair for $75 (that’s $37.50 each) or at max $135 for 2 pair…. basically its a great deal that I wouldn’t pass up. Plus its tax free weekend for some of you,

I GOTTA TRUST-FUND: Levis. Oh no, not just any Levi’s the oldest pair of Levi’s 501 jeans known- Vintage XX First Blue Rigid Jeans. At 407 bucks and 1 cent, these jeans are probably the purest ode to the classics you can find. If you have the cash, by all means spend away because if it wasn’t for Levis we wouldn’t have the jeans we know and love today.

MY FAVORITE: Nom De Guerre Classic Fit. These jeans are Super sexy, seriously I might melt if I see a guy in these- okay maybe that’s a bit extreme, but you get my drift. They look to be the perfect fit, they’re un-embellished, and they’re dark- so basically they’re a classic pair of designer jeans that are on sale from $250 to $148, niiiice…. and for you lucky brits that’s only £90.

ETC: If you want to choose from a huge variety of denim- ever color, every style, all the fits you can imagine visit Karmaloop.

Tees.
(bookbag tee from Karmaloop)

POCKET FRIENDLY: As always Dr.Jays, KarmaLoop, and EastWest Worldwide reign supreme on selection. If you want, let’s say, a more subtle selection choice, opt for Express or Armani.

I GOTTA TRUST FUND: To be honest as far as tees, no one entirely fits this category, but if I had to choose a store I’d say Oki-Ni. But they actually do have a quite a few pocket-friendly choices as well. I like their t-shirts because they’re extremely different and I doubt you’ll see someone else rocking it, so if originality is what you seek- choose Oki-Ni.

Polos.

FRED PERRY. enough said…. Okay, well maybe not, but everyone knows Fred Perry has some of the best polos. You can even catch guys wearing them on the red carpet.

POCKET FRIENDLY: If you want a larger selection of polos with a variety of colors, again I’d opt for Express… because their deals are just really on-point at the moment- 40% off…. only 20 bucks each.

ETC: Diddy actually has a nice selection of polos for Sean John, alot of great neutrals.

Shoes.

For this category, there’s just too many to name. So I’ll give you 3 of my favorite shoes now then I’ll come back later (after I take a nap, I’ve been up for almost 24 hours, crazy I know) and add on a bunch more.

- Converse, well they… hmmm, how can I put this- they’re just really awesome. They have a new make your own shoe feature, and it only cost $62… that’s not much for a custom designed shoe, actually that’s VERY inexpensive.

- There’s nothing, like a nice fresh pair of Vans to start the school year with.

- Okay, maybe I fibbed, maybe there’s nothing like a new pair of Creative Recreations to start the school year with. And ummm, the selection of styles and colors at shoes.com is vast.
