Let’s Peruse the Essentials of Cool

When Lupe said “Let’s peruse the essentials of cool” it was relevant, very relevant. Because there are certain items that every cool guy needs. This potential list could go on and on to the point that I could write a song about them like Lupe the Fiasco, but the essentials mean the bare minimums- so the list shouldn’t be too long. For each type of guy the essentials are different. For example, the urban prep guy’s necessities are going to be different from the punk rockers while one must atleast have a bow-tie the other must atleast have a studded belt… Going through everyone’s essential would take all day so I’m just gonna narrow them down…

First: The Basic List of Essentials…

1. Aviator shades.
They’re an instant swagger booster.

2. One pair of designer jeans.

I’m not one to encourage people to buy the most expensive clothes, but one pair of designer jeans is a must- they just fit and feel different-you feel completely different in them. I suggest a pair of Sevens or True Religion jeans- you can buy them for as little as $60 at Nordstrom Rack stores.

3. Blazer.
Navy, blue, or black and it should have a good fit.

4. A pair of Jordans or your favorite popular sneaker.
My motto is: everybody needs atleast one pair of J’s in their lifetime. But you can rock your favs as long as they’re sickening!

5. Fitted hat that reps your city.
I personally encourage an A’s fitted.

6.Fresh white sneakers.
You must have a fresh pair of white kicks, they instantly brighten up any outfit.

7. A trendy item.
At the moment that would be something like an arab scarf or a vest.

Now: The Specific List of
The Essentials of Cool

(Get all the Essentials here)

1. A Navy Blazer

Navy blazers are perfect, they’re preppy yet grown and sexy. Plus navy blazers often match with outfits the best because you can easily dress it up or down- preppy, urban, or professional.

2. Calvin Klein v-neck tshirt
They feel and fit great. It’s a great t-shirt that you could wear under neath a navy blazer or by itself. Great for a night in the club or afternoon in the park with your boo:-)

3. Red Converse

They’re classic- plain and simple. But they have an edge because they’re red. They’re like the equivalent to red pumps for women… you know how women will wear an all black outfit or all blue dress then just throw on some red pumps? its the same thing.White or black chucks are equally as classic, but they just don’t pop like the red.

4. Mirror Aviators

It’s just a standard, all the men with swagger rock em from Usher to Diddy to Nascar drivers and famous athletes- you just gotta have a pair.

5. Bold-colored Lacoste Polo
Lacoste is the original polo shirt, it Always looks good and fits great… that little green alligator just makes you look better. A bright color is modern, edgy, and shows confidence.

6. Generic Gold Watch or Plastic Casio Watch
They’re a must have accessory for every stylish guy.

7. Black Framed Glasses
You don’ have to need glasses to wear them . Black framed glasses are just really cool and they can make you look completely different in a good way.

8. Gray or Brown New Era Fitted Hat
Gray and brown are the “other neutrals” they match good with any color and they look edgier than white or black.

9. White High-Top Pumas
One thing my brothers taught me is that you can never go wrong with high-top white pumas, they just naturally look fly. To be honest, you can’t go wrong with any color high-top Puma.

10. Something signature Kanye, Lupe, or Pharrell
They’re at the top of the style charts, so it’s always cool to have something they rock on a regular like a coin wallet with a chain.

11. Baby Milo Shirt
I don’t think your whole wardrobe should be A Bathing Ape, but one Baby Milo shirt is needed for a little street cred.

12. Creative Recreation
They’re original, unique, and have the sickest color combination. Creative Reaction Shoes make you look instantaneously edgy.

13. Your Signature Cologne
Everyone has a scent and it’s important that yours smells good.

14. Most Importantly- Something That’s Signature You

It’s vital to have something that is your own style, something that you thought of, something in your wardrobe that’s 100% undoubtedly you. It could be a certain brand shoe that you always buy or it could be a certain belt that you always wear. Maybe it’s a green leather jacket that you rock atleast once a week, whatever it is it’s cool, cuz it’s you.

What are your essentials of cool?

Men’s Fashion: The Marching Band Jacket from Lupe Fiasco to Chris Brown to Michael Jackson

Being a nerd has never been so cool
Georgia Tech Marching Band

It’s never been so cool to be a nerd. Not only do nerds currently rule hip-hop, but they also dominant the current styles. From the most preppy L7 (square) clothes to borderline bi-focals. . . dressing nerdyish is too cool for school. And the marching band jacket falls right in line with these trends.
Chris Brown rockin a really haute band jacket at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards

Kanye West, Chris Brown, and Lupe Fiasco all seem to be fans of the band jackets. And the new Converse commercial featuring Santogold in a marching-band jacket has seemed to make the trend even more popular … everybody wants a band jacket now!

Lupe Fiasco has some of the most meticulously designed
marching band-esque jackets I’ve ever seen.
I’m sure Dr. Romanelli helped to create a few.
(Dr.Romanelli has designed several of Lupe’s jackets)

Wearable marching band jacket are actually pretty hard to come by. The style is popular, but only a few brands and stores carry it, so the jacket is sold out everywhere. I found a website that carries some unique variations of the marching band:

Ipso Facto Jackets

Life Research Group LRG carries variations of the
marching band jacket too

To be honest, the marching band jacket style isn’t just about marching band jackets. The style is actually a mix and cross-over between marching band jackets, military jackets, varsity jackets, and motorcycle jackets. Both Chris Brown and Lupe Fiasco sufficiently mix these styles in their wardrobes. And as long as you have one of those type jackets you can easily gain the edgy looks that the superstars create.
If you happen to come across “marchmiliVarmoto” type jacket, scoop it up quick because it most likely won’t be there for long.

This new style is also somehwhat of a tribute to Michael Jackson- who started it all. You can find many of these retro style jackets on for a really good price.

Lupe Style: The Fashion of Lupe Fiasco

Lupe Fiasco is the self-proclaimed “Coolest dude”

Hands down without a doubt, one of my favorite rappers is Lupe Fiasco, he’s just one cool dude. I remember being backstage at one of his concerts in Atlanta:

His crew was really interesting especially Gemstones- he was quite the character. Everyone was stylish in their own way. . . they seemed a bit rushed and stressed, so the hospitality wasn’t at its best, but that comes with the territory.

While being backstage I had a chance to not only meet Mr.Cool, but to also analyze his style. And I must say- it’s pretty simple. The formula to getting the “Lupe Look” is . . .

t-shirt + designer jeans + fly superbadAss unique sneakers = Lupe Look

He often time adds a fly superbadAss jacket to the mix and some accessories. The jacket is usually one of a kind and Michael Jackson-esque, Marching Band-esque or it’s dramatically preppy- like a colorful or goth varsity jacket. His accessories range, but they all stay within the skater, rock, or urban realm.

Common Lupe Fiasco accessories: studded belt, coin wallet w/chain attachment, arab scarf, aviator shades, book-bag, and he always has on a gold watch.

If you want to know what Lupe Fiasco wears on a more specific note, just listen to his music- he gives alot of names in his song “Gold Watch”:

In my Fall of Rome jeans, my Head Porter wallet My Neighborhood shirt and my Eddie Cheng clock . . . I like City candles and Maharishi sandals And Dita sunglasses, Purple Murder surface samples I like False T-shirts, Dover street is off the handle Such a good designer, Junya Watanabe got **** you I like Yohji Yamamoto and a Mackro Solo Leather Gucci belts and Guilty Brotherhood polo’s I like Montblanch pens and Moleskine paper I like Goyard bags and green Now or Later’s Monocle magazine and Japanese manga Futura, noz furatus and HTM trainers

For those of you who didn’t catch it. . .

Brands Lupe Fiasco wears: Fall of Rome jeans, Head Porter wallets, My Neighrbood shirts, Maharishi sandals, Dita sunglasses, False t-shirts, Junya Watanabe, Yohji Yamamoto, Gucci belts, Guilty Brotherhood polos, Goyard bags, HTM trainers (nike shoes). . .

Lupe Fiasco in a False t-shirt at his concert is Atlanta
So what does all that mean? It means Lupe loves Japanese designers and he likes original clothing especially local up-and-coming talented and unique designers. He doesn’t really wear brands like Bape and BBC (Billionaire Boys Club)- which he mentioned once in an interview.

Lupe’s jackets usually combine materials such as leather, wool, and cotton.

And for those who don’t know, according to certain sources Lupe Fiasco will be throwing in the towel for music:

The rapper say his next album, LupEND, will conclude his stint as a recording artist. The budding thespian will then move on to do other things, among them write a book. “I have one more album in me and then I’m out,” he says. “I’ve been doing this music hustle for eights years and have more things I still want to do. There are other ways besides putting out an album that allow me to channel my creative energy and I’m writing a book about a window washer. I will have more than enough to keep me busy.”

Well, I can’t wait for his final LP LupEND– it’s sure to be hot.
