College Cool RULES: Pharrell Williams

At a show in Paris at the Grand Palais: Picasso & The Masters

How many people can truly wear the sames thing over and over again and we love them all the same? Pharrell Williams truly has staple wardrobe items and he wears them well. I thought Andre 3000 was the “staple wardrobe” king with his A’s hat, converse, and suspenders, but Mr.NERD trumps him. After browsing through some of his photos- I noticed that Pharrell seems to have a few permanent staples and he also has seasonal staples. You may ask, what does he do to switch it up? Well, he just changes the color of his staples…

For example this summer/early fall he rocked red BBC hats, but lately he’s been rockin blue BBC hats. This summer/early fall he was rockin black/navy Vans, but lately he’s been rocking his tan Vans. This summer he rocked his white and navy/burgundy trimmed sweater, while lately he’s been rocking his army fatigued get-up.

Pharrell in Atlanta last month w/ Common.

He throws on a pastel colored polo every once in a while and maybe a plaid shirt for these cold months. His wardrobe is so simple, yet he makes all the Best Dressed List. Gentleman, this should tell you that it’s not about quantity it’s about quality and swagger. I feel like Pharrell is unconsciously being a great example for young men with his sense of style. His wardrobe says ” You do not have to own 200 pairs of shoes to be cool, I rock $45$/$60 dollar Vans on a regular and I’m the shyt”. I LOVE IT. Now of course Pharrell has a lifestyle that involves more informal settings, so if you’re a banker or something this obviously only applies to your weekend gear.

I also feel like his sense of style tells all men that it’s important to figure out your sense of style and be confident with it– wear what makes you feel good because Pharrell surely does.

He Hearts SpongeBob: Pharrell Rocks SpongeBob Socks

Look at this image, would you have guessed that this picture
is of a rapper?
Maybe now, but 10 years ago- NO.

Rapper Pharrell Williams has a crazy love for Spongebob Square Pants. In FASHION ROCKS he reveals what attracts him to the Nickoledeon cartoon character. “What I love about SpongeBob,” Pharrell says, “is that he’s basically a six-year-old.”

Okay, so there were a few ways that I was gonna spin this article, at first I was gonna ask you all what cartoon characters would you like to see in the lines of designers- ernie and burt? barnie? winnie the pooh? lol… But now I really want to focus on why Pharrell and other men love these cartoons so much. Let me know what you think and let me know why you love a particular cartoon as well.

Pharrell and his Spongebob mask- it hides him from the paparazzi pretty well.

Pharrell Wears Red and Black

Wait, hold up, is that.. is that, yeah it is- hmmm, so Pharrell’s rockin’ the Beckham one shirt tail in one shirt tail out as well huh… pretty cool. And I’m lovin’ the Martin Margiela jacket… hot ish.

Check it, Pharrell with Madonna @ Madison Square Garden: NYC-Hard Candy Tour.

Pharrell keeps fashion so simple to me… even when he wears alot of layers (as seen above) it still seems as if his style is effortless. For example, look at his jeans, now check the Urban Gent archives for Pharrell (tag cloud on lower right hand side of page)- what you will see is that he wears these same exact jeans everywhere, with everything… and I personally LOVE it- I mean he’s rich so he clearly has like 20 pair, but still we can’t tell… I think the motto of the day will be “do you” b/c it’s clear that you can be stylish and not own 1000 shirts and 1000 pair of jeans… simplicity is a key ingredient to style these days.

PS- look at Pharrell’s ensemble with and without the glasses, which looks better…. with the glasses, right? Sometimes small things can make a big difference. I don’t like the outfit in the bottom picture, but in the middle and top pictures I think it’s pretty fresh. If you don’t own a pair already, please cop some glasses... they can really make your look.

An Orginator of Fly: The Style of Pharrell Williams

The style of Pharrell Williams is purely iconic

Pharrell Williams is simply fly. He began as a behind-the-scenes guy producing some of the hottest beats and tracks for stars to being his own hip-hop rock sensation. And like wine- with time he's managed to age into one of the coolest most unique easygoing chill nerds we all know. . . and love! Just like his music, his style has also gracefully developed to be one of the best in the world. He's been idolized and adorned by all the top style powerhouses including Gentleman's Quaterly (GQ).

I love Pharrell for his ability to make looking fashionable easy. I absolutely love the style of guys like Kanye West, but let's be real- you Know they take a good bit of time thinking carefully about what to rock. Pharrell, on the other hand, rarely looks like that. And the fact that he's pushing 40, and he's able to wear what he wears without us questioning it, is fly. . .well, lol, he's like 35- which is young, but you get what I mean . . . Pharrell's style should not be taken for granted by anyone. Yeah he may rock an over-sized purple Hermes bag, but hey – he's Pharrell. And the older some guys get the more flamboyant they become as well. . . and that isn't always a bad thing.

Alright so dude is unique. He mixes skater guy + beach bum + hip hop + prep. Alot huh? Yeah it is, but to be honest he is actually one of the originators of this look that every guy tries to rock these days. And since he's an orginator you should pay close attention to how he dresses. Basically his style is a collaboration of different looks and on the average day to get Pharrell's look, you do this:

small/medium one-image graphic tee + quality denim jeans (that are slightly fitted) + ice cream or bape shoes or low-top vans+ trucker hat + keychain on your jeans + digital watch = Pharrell's style.

Now of course the easiest way to get Pharrell's look is to just rock clothes from his Billionaire's Boys Club line. But in general, the brands Pharrell wears are: A Bathing Ape (BAPE), Ice Cream, BBC, and Louis Vuitton. And as of late he's shown love for murses and manbags- a term he hates by the way, lol- sorry Pharrell. So rockin a bright colored travel bag with your threads may give you an even more authentic Pharrell look.

Mr.Williams doesn't just do the whole casual hip-hop/skater/beach bum look, he also dresses perfectly preppy on a regular- check out his latest photos from GQ Magazine's July Issue:

At the end of the day Pharrell is a world-wide trendsetter and when you add that to the fact that he was Voted The Best Dressed Man in the World by Esquire in 2005, well that just boosts his fashion credibility and make's him one of the most official Urban Gentleman.
