Ethyn: 4 1/2. Young. & Fly.

Photobucket

Looks like this young urban gent from our last post has been identified as 4 1/2 year old Ethyn. It took less than 24 hours, if that, after posting, for his mom to email us claiming her young fly son. She was told by friends and wanted us to know who he was… news travels soooo fast these days! His mother, Courtney, is a lover of hip-hop and has always wanted her kid to have alot of shoes… "Growing up I always wanted my kids to have as many shoes as possible so the majority of his shoes are picked out by his dad & I. He still doesn't really care much about his shoes or clothes YET, but out of all of his shoes his ultimate faves are the Jordan 5's."

Pretty sweet, Ethyn has about 30 pairs of shoes…. and he's 4 1/2 and still growing… I wonder how many shoes he'll have when he's 18?

Lunch Break: LA Gears & Milkshakes.

Black & White LA Gear KAJ. You can cop a pair here.

These are from LA Gear's 1990s "Unstoppable" line.

Weeks and weeks ago, Kanayo and I took a lunch break to hit up our local Steak & Shake. We both had a sweet-tooth and, well, you can't help but love Steak & Shake's Happy Hour: Snicker,  Butterfinger, and Butter Pecan milkshakes (just to name a few) for 1/2 off — it's a pretty sweet deal. Then we figured… might as well get a steakburger too. We definitely don't encourage fast food (except for maybe Chick-fil-a), but every now and then won't hurt too bad.

90s Steez: Vintage Disney denim jacket, Bape graphic tee,

Diesel jeans, Unstoppable LA Gears.

During our back to school article, seeing the Y-3 Yohji Yamamato Neo Tech sneakers gave me  flashbacks of LA Gears. So Sportie LA was nice enough to send us a couple pairs. LA gear's are definitely stand-outs due to its size, so if you like people to really notice your kicks… get a pair of Unstoppables.

Converse: Men's shoes.
All-Star Slim Garment Dye, were $70 on sale for $49.99. These are pretty sweet. I can see them teamed up with a pair of slim fit jeans (for some reason G-stars come to mind), a well fitting button-up– buttoned all the way up (sleeves rolled), and classic shades.

Photobucket
Toms: Brown Waxed Twill Men's Cordones, $69. For me it's like this: if I can look amazing and help out the less fortunate at the same time– why the hell not, lol. The purpose of these Toms are just to add a little spice to the wardrobe, like when you're headed to the college football games, instead of wearing sneakers or deck shoes– you throw these on. Or if you're going out on a Saturday night, maybe choose these instead of the brown loafers you would typically wear.

Photobucket

Puma Tekkies. Here's a great buy, these shoes are on sale for $27. You can sport them through the rest of the summer, part of the fall, then bring them back out next spring. And let's face it, its tough finding men's shoes under $30, sooo, yeaa sizes are scarce but they have these in off-white/khaki, red, brown, and navy… I'm partial to the off-white/khaki.

Photobucket
Red Wing Wabasha Chukka, $220. Sometimes you have to take a chance on a pair of shoes that you can go either way with. You know the kind of shoes that you look at, then squint your eyes a little, and you make that little noise "aaaeennn…" or maybe it's a high-pitched "hmmmm" (lol, I don't know how to "write" the noise), basically you think, "these shoes are sorta subtly badass, but they're also a little risky." These are those type of shoes to me– these will either go fantastically right or they'll be aiight, depending on who wears them. For me these are a clean combination of a 6 inch traditional wheat colored timb boot -and- your average pair of chukkas, with small moccasin undertones and a hint of deck/boat.

Photobucket
Marc Jacobs College Ankle Boot, $568. I don't know why, but these really do it for me. They're like a relaxed elegant military boot. I usually wouldn't go this shiny, but theses work. Hmmm…. oh, okay, I know what it is, these are like a "calmer" version of Dr.Martens. Either way, I like them, these would make for a great 2nd or 3rd winter boot.

Photobucket
Adidas Y-3 by Yohji Yamamoto Neo Tech, $364. I see these shoes and I think, "Just stunt on 'em". Seriously though, sometimes you just have to go hard or go home and these shoes bring it. Yeah, it's alot going on in some sense, but they're black and they'll look good winter after winter, summer after summer, atleast for the next 3 years (especially since trends are just leading right back into the 90s… I'm waiting for LA Gears to return on the scene, lol…).

I can't send y'all back to school without a fresh pair of white kicks (remember when you haaaaad to get a fresh pair of white shoes before every school year? I do. Some years I opted for Adidas, others Fila's, as I got older Hi-Top Pumas made the top of the list, but I particularly remember choosing K-swiss a couple of times when I had to wear uniforms to school. So since everyone around here is prepped out anyway, I think a classic pair of K-swiss would be a good move for someone looking for a simple pair of white shoes. They'll look good with navy, khaki, plaid, stripes, etc. (Don't forget to use the 15% off discount code BTSSHOES10). If, the k-swiss aren't for you, then you can choose one of the many pair of white shoes above (so maybe common projects, creative recs, supras, nikes, just take your pick).

Photobucket
Nike Air Max 1 Omega Pack, $148.06. Traditional Nike trainers is how I see these. For some these will be a comfortable weekly school shoe for others a fresh weekend shoe, either way they're a safe bet (and they're limited edition).

The Summer Debate: Do Gentlemen Wear Sandals?

Photobucket

Guys, and gals for that matter, have been debating this for decades. Well, atleast over the past two decades. And the answer? Well, it’s not as simple as yes or no.

When searching for an answer on this topic, I got so many points of view… some said it was totally okay because the “manliest men” have been wearing them since the beginning of time: Roman gladiators, “Greek gods”, African kings… even Jesus. While others look at men in sandals as downright feminine, saying things like “I don’t wear anything that’s considered woman’s clothing, that includes purses, skirts, and sandals.”

Photobucket
Shoemaker in Dominican Republic

All the gentlemen wardrobe/styling books tend to avoid the topic of men in sandals. And when a book does mention it, it’s either sternly against it or indirectly snubs it. A friend told me that he once read a rule in Esquire Mag that stated, “You lose 61 percent of your respect for a man when you can see his toes through his shoes.” (or something like that).

With that said, plenty of well dressed gentlemen opt for a luxe pair of sandals when in sunny Rio de Janeiro, vacationing in Jamaica, or simply strolling through the cobblestone streets of Sicily. So, now you may ask– what’s the final verdict, can me wear sandals or not?

The Traditional -vs- The Nontraditional

The issue of gentlemen wearing sandals is simply a matter of the traditional versus the nontraditional. The Urban Gentleman who chooses the traditional route should not expose his toes; canvas lace-ups, decks shoes, loafers, and oxfords all worn sockless is how he keeps his feet cool in the summer months.

Traditional Urban Gentlemen should just go sockless

The Urban Gentleman that chooses the nontraditional route should wear sandals that match his style. And let’s be honest we can mentally flip through our rolodex of friends and picture which friends can pull off sandals and which can’t. The extremely environmentally conscious type, the world traveler type, and the vintage hipster type are just a few that I can see getting away with sandals.
Photobucket
The hipster urban gents can get away with just about anything

But whether traditional or nontraditional, flip-flops on the beach are just common sense. And sandals are just apart of life for the Urban Gents from island countries.

Disclaimer: If you are choosing to wear sandals, then please get a pedicure. There’s nothing worse than a man wearing sandals with unkempt feet. Make sure your toenails are cut and feet are moisturized, for more help go here.
