From Steve Martin to Will Smith: The Jean Shirt and Suit.

Photobucket

A little over two weeks ago, I found myself watching the first 30 minutes or so of Steve Martin’s Father of the Bride. Yeah, it’s not my first choice in movies, but it happened to come on right after Happy Gilmore (or some other common TBS Adam Sandler movie), and the remote control was too far away to immediately turn the channel, lol.

While watching I couldn’t help but notice Steve Martin’s jean shirt, suit, and tie combination. He sported a baggy jean shirt, slightly over-sized blazer, double-pleated pants, and a fat tie that looked like it was made from my grandmother’s drapes. And though the look wasn’t the very best, it was a very common casually dressy look for the 90s. I’ve seen the look plenty of times when watching repeats of Living Single, Friends, Seinfeld, and even some of the later episodes of The Cosby Show.

Then last week (more like a week and a half ago) I watched an episode of Oprah that featured Will Smith. I silently chuckled to myself when I saw Will’s ensemble– it was literally the modern version of Steve Martin’s jean shirt and suit.

This picture really doesn’t reflect how good Will’s ensemble
looked on the show. (It was taken with my phone, lol)

Photobucket
Will wore a khaki colored cotton jacket and pants, jean shirt, black tie with silver clip, flowery pocket square (looked like it may have been by Duchamp), striped socks, and black bucks. He looked great.

Not everyone can pull off a jean shirt and suit because the look is still very 90’s-ish, and if paired incorrectly you’ll just look like you got stuck in a 1995 episode of Frasier. But if done right, then it can be very stylish. The hands down best pairing of a suit and jean shirt would be: a well-fitting light summer suit that’s cotton or linen, the jean shirt of course, a pair of bucks (bucks are a gentleman’s summer dress shoe), and a pocket square. If the occasion calls for it you can also add a fedora and/or a skinny tie and tie-clip.

Mr. Charming: The Style of Theophilus London

Photobucket

So I wrote this on Feb 16th (when I first started the article):
(Sigh of relief) finally finally finally [hip-hop] music is getting good again– and no I’m not talking about Drake, Kid Cudi, or even Wale (those guys are all really cool) I’m moreso speaking of the Bobby Ray’s and Theophilus London’s of the world– the artists with the unique versatile sounds.

Photobucket

Theophilus London first grabbed my attention when I heard his remix to Solange’s “Sand Castle Black x Blue” a year or so ago. Since then I’ve been secretly addicted… a few of my favorites from his charming mixtape: “Want You for Myself” (Peter Hadar featuring Theophilus London), “Grey X Sage” (his remix to the international hit Sabali), and “Always Love You” (a poppy electronic version of Whitney Houston’s hit song).

Photobucket

And now on May 31st:
Well, I’ve spent the last three weeks entranced with his latest mixtape, I Want You. Between his new album and Janelle Monae’s The ArchAndroid, minus a few rounds of Ella, Sammy, and Frank, it seems like the new-wave of music is all my itunes player knows. (Oh and Lykke Li has been getting alot of play too)

His cover of Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You”, Tweets “Oops”, and the mysteriously erotic beats of “Soles Of Fire (Chauffeur)” float around in my top three. (The first 57 seconds of Soles Of Fire, can’t be described as anything but sexy, the beat goes hard and it’s also very sexy). Matter of fact, just listen to it yourself…

… pretty damn sexy, huh? Yeaa, I already know šŸ˜‰
The Style of Theophilus London

Theo’s style can’t just be categorized as hipsterish… it’s more like a direct ode to the past, 96% vintage 4% new school. He likes layers– lots of em, swanky college or NBA snap-backs (90s style), blazers, button ups, jean outerwear, corduroys, classic frames (he usually sports brown tortoise shell by Oliver Peoples, clubmasters, or classic clear wayfarers), and whichever kicks complete his raw vintage 70s/90s look. Mr.London’s style is actually reminiscent of past local urban gentleman Curran Swint.

To authentically get Theophilus’s style you’d have to spend your days in vintage and thrift stores and on sites like etsy and ebay. And I know its often hard to dig through the thousands of threads these stores have, but you have to get in the mindset of shopping there like it’s the only option you have, lol. Once you lock-down on that mindset it’ll be much easier to have visions for the clothing these stores offer (and it wouldn’t hurt to have some inspiration photos in your pocket or on your phone).

But if you don’t have the time for all that,
well you can scoop his look below:

And as far as his album, well…

ā€œShortly before we got his third mixtape I WANT YOU, Theophilus London released a DIY promo video for the track ā€œLife Of A Loverā€. The record loops lazily to show us a new look: pretty girls dancing with each other at a show, young dudes headnodding, the crush of cameras and hard flash that now follows us everywhere we go, a cut to Theophilus in monochrome riding in a Vespa gang through Chinatown en route to Brooklyn and then back to the danceā€”a mic cord drifting slowly in and out of the frame and his hand reaching out to bring a girl on stage. That is all and this is it: inspired by Marvin Gayeā€™s self-imposed European exile and controversial performance of the national anthem at the 1983 NBA All Star game, I WANT YOU is a collection of dark jams that restlessly examines the promise of love beyond lifestyle. Touching on LA electrofunk, UK indie, tropical escapade and obscure afropop you never knew existed, these are stories from the way we live now: missed connections and misunderstandings, video chats and retweets, returns and deliverables. We know today is all black everything but more to the point: this is now noir as we know it. And this is Theophilus London.ā€

The Summer Debate: Do Gentlemen Wear Sandals?

Photobucket

Guys, and gals for that matter, have been debating this for decades. Well, atleast over the past two decades. And the answer? Well, it’s not as simple as yes or no.

When searching for an answer on this topic, I got so many points of view… some said it was totally okay because the “manliest men” have been wearing them since the beginning of time: Roman gladiators, “Greek gods”, African kings… even Jesus. While others look at men in sandals as downright feminine, saying things like “I don’t wear anything that’s considered woman’s clothing, that includes purses, skirts, and sandals.”

All the gentlemen wardrobe/styling books tend to avoid the topic of men in sandals. And when a book does mention it, it’s either sternly against it or indirectly snubs it. A friend told me that he once read a rule in Esquire Mag that stated, “You lose 61 percent of your respect for a man when you can see his toes through his shoes.” (or something like that).

With that said, plenty of well dressed gentlemen opt for a luxe pair of sandals when in sunny Rio de Janeiro, vacationing in Jamaica, or simply strolling through the cobblestone streets of Sicily. So, now you may ask– what’s the final verdict, can me wear sandals or not?

The Traditional -vs- The Nontraditional

The issue of gentlemen wearing sandals is simply a matter of the traditional versus the nontraditional. The Urban Gentleman who chooses the traditional route should not expose his toes; canvas lace-ups, decks shoes, loafers, and oxfords all worn sockless is how he keeps his feet cool in the summer months.

Traditional Urban Gentlemen should just go sockless

The Urban Gentleman that chooses the nontraditional route should wear sandals that match his style. And let’s be honest we can mentally flip through our rolodex of friends and picture which friends can pull off sandals and which can’t. The extremely environmentally conscious type, the world traveler type, and the vintage hipster type are just a few that I can see getting away with sandals.

The hipster urban gents can get away with just about anything

But whether traditional or nontraditional, flip-flops on the beach are just common sense. And sandals are just apart of life for the Urban Gents from island countries.

Disclaimer: If you are choosing to wear sandals, then please get a pedicure. There’s nothing worse than a man wearing sandals with unkempt feet. Make sure your toenails are cut and feet are moisturized, for more help go here.
